POQUOSON - Maggie Lena Garrett Firth, 94, went home to be with the Lord, her beloved husband "Captain" John Riley Firth, and her son, Edward O. Firth, on Monday, Aug. 11, 1997.

"Mama" will be sadly missed by her children; four sons, Nelson Firth, John W. Firth and E.T. Firth Sr., all of Poquoson, and Gene R. Firth of Tabb; six daughters, Queenie Holt of Gloucester, Shirley Rabon and Betty Adams, both of York County, and Essie Firman, Anna Fiese and Judie Hogge, all of Poquoson; her beloved brother, Junious "Jimmy" Lee Garrett of Newport News; her two beloved sisters, Catherine Fetter of Newport News and Edna Firth of Poquoson; and many nieces, nephews, and friends - too many to count.

She was so proud of her large family: 11 children, 43 grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren and 24 great-great-grandchildren. To them, there has never lived a woman more deserving of her place in heaven, and they hope that the love she has shown them all will sustain them as a family long after she's gone. Of all the gifts which have been bestowed on this family, Maggie Lena Garrett Firth is the most beloved, without a doubt, and one of God's most precious jewels.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home and at other times at 173 Ridge Road in Poquoson. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1254 Poquoson Ave., Poquoson. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that contributions be made to the Poquoson Rescue Squad, or Souls Harbor Christian Center.

POQUOSON - Nelson Ervin "Doc" Firth, 91, a native & lifelong resident of Poquoson, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He worked as a waterman his entire life, and was described in a recent Daily Press article as "the oldest working waterman". He loved baseball and played on the Messick ball team. Nelson was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Al Firth; son, Nelson "Bubba Joe" Firth; granddaughter, Leslie Forrest; and son-in-law, Mike Powell. He is survived by a son, Dwaine "Tiny" Firth & wife, Melanie; two daughters, Mary Sue Powell, and Kay Graham & husband, Mickey; daughter-in-law, Alice Nell Firth; sisters, Essie Firman, Shirley Rabon, Queenie Holt, Betty Adams, and Judie Hogge; brother, E. T. Firth; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Nan Firman & husband, Eddie; and many other special family members. The family will receive friends Saturday, 6:30-8:00 PM, at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson, and other times at 171 Ridge Road, Poquoson. A funeral service will be held Sunday, 2:00 PM, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Poquoson, by Rev. Charles R. Stacy and Rev. Milford C. Rollins.
