(Research):NOVI -- Christmas was Thomas Howard's favorite time of the year was Christmas. A kind man, it was during this time of the year that he would buy tons of gifts for all of his friends and family. One Christmas he bought all 22 of his nieces and nephews a pair of skates for the weekly outings at the roller rink, his family recalled. "He dovoted his life to the service of others," his son Michael Howard said. "He was a very kind and generous man who did a lot of things for other people." He died following complications from open heart surgery at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he graduated from St. Gregory High School. He attended the University of Detroit and the Detroit College of Law in 1958. He became a criminal defense lawyer and spent 45 years in the field. Described as a brilliant, creative thinker, he earned a reputation as a highly skilled cross examiner. Other survivors include his wife, Marsha; son Austin; sisters, Julia, Mary Howard Stolberg and Ann O'Hare; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

In her younger years she was a downhill skier and figure skater. She also played piano and was a volunteer clown in the Thanksgiving Day Parade several times. In her later years she enjoyed pencil drawing, oil painting, and gardening.

In state Monday 9:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. James Catholic Church, 46325 W. Ten Mile Rd., Novi (Between Taft and Beck). Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. She is buried with her son Thomas R. Howard and later joined by her former husband, criminal defense attorney Thomas A. Howard.

Mr. Stolberg was a graduate of Wayne State University and Detroit College of Law.

Mr. Stolberg was a brilliant trial lawyer who genuinely cared for his clients and their needs. His practice spanned 26 years at Goldpaugh & Associates, P.C., Detroit, Michigan.

Mr. Stolberg's interests included reading, history, the arts and antiques.

He is survived by his loving sister, Barbara J. Stolberg; aunts, Julia Brigid Howard and Ann O'Hare; uncle, Kenneth Robertson; and numerous loving cousins and friends.

Sadly, he was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Mary Julia Howard Stolberg in 2005, and his sisters, Mary Margaret in 2009, and Ann Brigid in 2012.

The Stolbergs will receive guests at the funeral home on Sunday, December 22nd, from 2-8 pm. A prayer service in scheduled for 7 pm.

Donald's funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, December 23rd, at 10:00 am (in state 9:30 am) at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 23615 Power Rd., Farmington. Reverend Fr. Mark Brauer, Pastor, will preside.

Interment in the family site at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield, will follow mass.

Sadly, she was preceded in death by her adoring mother, Mary Julia Howard Stolberg in 2005, her sisters, Mary Margaret in 2009, and Ann Brigid in 2012 and her brother, Donald Howard Stolberg in 2013.

Barbara Jo was a very talented viola and violinist who throughout her life was a member of the Stolberg String Quartet, and performed with the Savannah Charleston Symphony, Grand Rapids Symphony, Detroit Symphony, and Michigan Opera Theatre. She was also a loving and caring Violin Teacher and a life-long member of the Detroit Federation of musicians.

Barbara Jo was also an outstanding Real Estate Broker who won many awards. Her interests were many and varied. Hers was a virtuous and well-spent life. It is suggested that those who wish to honor her memory may do so by making charitable contributions to the American Cancer Society.
