(Research):PORTLAND - Francis S. "Toby" Rowe, 96, passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospital on April 28, 2017, after a period of declining health.
Toby was born in Portland and lived almost all of his adult life in South Portland.
He was the son of the late Francis and Sadie (Coyne) Rowe.
Toby graduated from Portland High School in the class of 1939 and shortly, thereafter, joined the United States Army and served in World War II in a medical detachment.
After the war, he joined the Army National Guard and served in the Korean Conflict. Toby was proud of his service, and this past October, he had the privilege of visiting Washington, D.C. as a guest of the Honor Flight Maine Organization.
He was employed at the Maine Central Railroad for 18 years and the U.S. Postal Service, as a letter Carrier for 22 years prior to his retirement in 1983. He was a longtime member of the National Letter Carriers Union.
During retirement, Tobey enjoyed being at his "camp" in Casco and visiting, fishing, and boating with his family. He enjoyed woodworking, chair caning, and bird watching. He was a volunteer and supporter of the Wayside Soup kitchen.
He was a many decade communicant of St. John the Evangelist Parish in South Portland until it closed, at which time he joined the parish at St. Maximilian Kolbe in Scarborough. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
Toby was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Sarah (Kane) Rowe in 2009, a brother, Thomas L. Rowe, two sisters, Kathleen Dowd, and Eleanore R. Tomusko.
He is survived by a son, Stephen F. Rowe, MD and his wife Rhonda of Bedford, N.H.; two daughters, Joanne M. Contois and her husband, Richard Contois, DMD of Biddeford, and Patricia A. Littlejohn and her husband, Peter, of South Portland. He leaves behind eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, May 2, 2017, from 4-7pm at the CONROY-TULLY WALKER SOUTH PORTLAND CHAPEL, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at 9:15am, followed by a 10am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, 150 Black Point Road, Scarborough. (Research):Richard Contois, D.M.D., 69, passed away peacefully at Maine Medical Center on February 8, 2020, after a brief illness. Rick was a proud and steadfast husband, father, and Pepere.
Richard was born in Biddeford on September 9, 1950, was raised in Biddeford and remained here his whole life. He was the son of the late Raynald and Laurence (Carrier) Contois.
Rick graduated from St. Louis High School in the class of 1968 and attended St. Francis College (UNE). He then went to Tufts School of Dentistry. He practiced family dentistry in Old Orchard Beach for thirty-six years, and happily retired in 2011 after a very rewarding career.
He enjoyed family vacations at Walt Disney World and Boothbay Harbor. During retirement, Rick enjoyed traveling with his wife, gardening, reading, and visiting with family. Rick cooked for his family every Sunday and holiday. He enjoyed the beach in the summer and spending time with his family at the lake. He always had time for a poker game, board game, or a round of cribbage.
He was a many decade communicant of St. Andre's Parish in Biddeford until it closed, at which time he joined the parish at St. Martha's in Kennebunk.
Rick is survived by his wife and best friend, Joanne (Rowe) Contois of Biddeford; two sons, Andrew R. Contois of Boston, MA and Philip P. Contois and his wife Julihana of Saugus, MA; a daughter Catherine A. Contois of Quincy, MA; and his brother Paul Contois and his wife Mary Ann of Biddeford. He leaves behind a grandson, Jacob Patrick Contois, along with nieces and nephews.
Visiting Hours will 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm Street, Biddeford, ME 04005. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday at St. Martha's Church, 30 Portland Rd., Kennebunk, ME 04043. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Biddeford.
