Thomas D. Kitson dies this morning

Thomas D. Kitson, 68, of 305 Oak St., a General Electric Co. employee for 40 years, died at 5:50 a.m. today at the Adams county memorial hospital, where he had been a patient six days. He had been ill for the past year.

He was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church, K of C, and the Quarter Century club of G.E. Mr. Kitson was a retired G.E. employee.

Born in Decatur on May 26, 1906, he was the son of Charles and Rose Durkin-Kitson, and was married on Jan. 25, 1932, to Fay Fritzinger, who survives.

Also surviving are three children, Dan of Lillebonne, France, with the Firestone Co, for 12 years; David of Decatur; Mrs. Jerry (Mary Lou) Stout of Decatur; one sister, Mrs. Russell (Jennie) Byer of route 1,Willshire, O.; two brothers, Joe and Harold of Decatur; and eight grandchildren. One sister, Winefride and one brother, Anthony W., preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Rev. Msgr. Simeon Schmitt officiating. Burial will be I the St. Joseph Catholic cemetery. Friends may call at the Zwick funeral home after 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Mary Richardine Meyers, 63, died Saturday morning in St Joseph's Hospital.

Mrs Meyers was the wife of Superior Court Judge Robert E Meyers and a lifelong Fort Wayne resident.

Other survivors include one son, John of Centerville, Ohio; one brother, the Rev Richard J Smith of Lakeville; and two sisters, Sally Springer of Fort Wayne and Rose Eileen Moran of Wilmington, Del.

Services will be at noon Tuesday in St Vincent DePaul Catholic Church. Friends may call from 7 to 9 pm today and from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm Monday at Mungovan & Sons Memorial Chapel, where the rosary will be read at 8 pm Monday, and one hour before services in the church. ARBIERI, JODEPH JR., 83, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, surrounded by his family. Born March 10, 1926, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Chicago, Ill., he was the son of Amelia Holub Barbieri and Joseph Barbieri Sr. He moved to Fort Wayne in November of 1938. After graduating from South Side High School in 1943, he entered the University of Notre Dame where he was a student until enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1944. Discharged in 1946 as a Field Artillery Lieutenant after serving in the Japanese Occupation Army, he returned to Notre Dame in 1947 to continue engineering studies. It was on New Year's Eve of 1947 when he met the "woman of his dreams", Kathryn Kohne. They were inseparable from that time on. After he graduated from Notre Dame in June of 1949 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, he and Kathy were married on July 2, 1949 at St. John the Baptist Church, Fort Wayne. His first job was as production manager at Pollack Bros., a women's garment manufacturing company in Fort Wayne. In November of 1950, he was recalled to the Army to Ft. Sill, Okla. during which time he was trained as an Army Aviator. Discharged in 1951, he then returned to Pollack Bros. and in 1959 became president. In 1961, he took over ownership of the company and in 1963 sold Pollack Bros. to Berkshire Apparel where he continued employment until the late 1960's. Simultaneously, he served as Regimental Pilot for the 293rd Infantry National Guard. In 1969, he was appointed Business Manager of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese. His accomplishments included computerizing all fiscal records for the 88 parishes and missions in an era of adding machines and ledger books. During the early 1970's, he worked with Bishop Leo Pursley to change the composition of the diocesan board of directors from all clergy to clergy and laity. He also was instrumental in establishing the first retirement program for diocesan priests. In the late 1970's, he returned to the business world and in 1983 started Home Guard Industries, a manufacturer of residential steel security doors. He passed the business on to his sons and semi-retired in 1994. In his retirement, he enjoyed traveling throughout the country with his wife, Kathy and spending summers with his family at their cottage at Lake Wawasee, where he was an avid boater. He studied classical piano for many years but will be remembered for entertaining his friends and family with lively renditions of 1940's jazz. He continued to enrich his life and his family's with his many interest and hobbies and embraced each with great passion. In addition to his long and productive business career, he was active in his community and earned various awards and honors including Eagle Scout and Notre Dame Man of the Year. He was past president of the Catholic Cemetery Board, member of Indiana Catholic Conference and member of the Diocesan Fiscal Management Conference. He was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. He is survived by his brother, Robert John of Fort Wayne; seven children, Joe (Konnie) Barbieri, Brian (Ann) Barbieri and Susan (Tony) Henry, all of Fort Wayne, Ann (Peter) van Dyk of Valparaiso, Peggy (David) Rothman of San Francisco, Nancy (Mike) Sachs of Milwaukee, and Mary (Pat) Carter of Alamo, Calif.; 16 grandchildren, Peter, Jack, Joe, Daniel, Elizabeth, Paul, Meredith, Sarah, Laura, Claire, Julia, Will, Claudia, Meg, Nick, and John; five stepgrandchildren; and one great-grandchild, Sylvia. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Kathryn. Mass of Christian Burial is noon Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1910 Hale Ave., with calling one hour prior. Fr. Timothy Wrozek officiating. Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road, with vigil at 4:30 p.m. Burial in Catholic Cemetery.
