Memorial service for Peggy Shane, DeLand, who died peacefully at home Fri., Jan. 11, 2008, with her family by her side, will be 2 p.m. today (Tues., Jan. 15) at St. Peter's Catholic Church in DeLand with Deacon Bob LaPlante officiating. Mrs. Shane was born June 7, 1926, in McKeesport, Pa., and attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. In 1977 Peggy and her husband, Steve, moved to DeLand and chose to live on the St. Johns River. Peggy particularly enjoyed fishing, taking their grandchildren to Hontoon Island State Park and watching the annual boat parade. She took great pleasure in traveling around the country in their motor home, seeing new places and visiting other family members. Peggy had an active and happy life. She was involved with St. Peter's Catholic Church where she was a Eucharistic minister. A scholarship in her name is presented annually to a graduating senior of St. Peter's School. She was a longtime member and past president of the Lake Beresford Garden Club. Peggy was a very caring person and to know her was to love her. Her love, wit, and undestanding will be forever missed by her surviving family, including her husband, Steve; three sons, Curtis and wife, Mathea, Joe and his wife, Theresa, and Matt and his wife, Donna; daughter, Susan Hall, and her husband, Jon, DeLand; nine grandchildren, Collette Lusk, Stephen Shane, Kelly Shane, Christopher Shane, Kerry Dykes Ribak, Andrew Dykes, Jeremy Dykes, Craig DeStefano and Allison Kaye; eight great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler or the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
