Catherine Leonard, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025, at the age of 86, surrounded by her family.



Catherine was born on July 31,1938, in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, to John and Catherine Coyne of County Mayo, Ireland. She was the youngest of three children growing up in a loving family where faith, tradition, and connection to extended relatives were central to her life. The family settled in Woodhaven, Queens where she attended St. Thomas the Apostle School and St. Michael's High School in Brooklyn.



After graduating, Catherine worked at Western Electric in New York City and indulged her love of travel and exploration. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Jerry Leonard from Hollis, Queens. They soon married and moved to Queens Village and eventually settled and raised their children in New Hyde Park.



Catherine was predeceased by her loving husband, Jerry, daughter Maureen, brother Michael and sister, Mary. She is survived by her four children Kathleen, Eileen, Mary (Andrew), Thomas (Ann Marie), her 10 grandchildren, Michael (Alexandra), Christopher (Samantha), Daniel (Kathleen), Courtney, Cirsten, Madeleine, Connor, Jack, Joseph and Grace and 4 great-grandchildren Cameron, Olivia, Brooks, Mason and her fifth great-grandchild is expected in May.



Catherine and Jerry loved spending time together in the Catskills and on Long Island's East End, creating lifelong memories with their family. As a devoted homemaker, Catherine poured her heart into her family. She was a gifted cook, baker and a talented knitter and dressmaker. When her children were older, she went back to work and spent many years at Seabury and Smith Inc. and made lifelong friendships along the way.



Catherine's faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was a devoted member of the Rosary Altar Society and served as a Eucharistic Minister at Notre Dame Parish. Catherine was also an active member in the Consolation Ministry, providing comfort to others in times of grief.



Catherine was quick to laugh and had a light about her that brightened the lives of all

who knew her — always making the most of life and sharing her joy with others. She was known for her warmth, generosity, and unwavering support, always ready to lend a hand or offer a word of encouragement and hope and of course, her love of ice cream and the beach.



Catherine's light will continue to shine through her family, her faith, and the countless lives she touched with her love and kindness. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered with love.

Mary Margaret Engelhart, 84, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on July 1, 2021 at Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains. Born in Queens to John and Catherine Coyne, she grew up in Woodhaven and attended St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Academy and Dominican Commercial High School. After high school, Mary became an executive secretary at Union Carbide in New York City, a position she held for approximately 3 years.



Mary met the love of her life, John, who also grew up in Woodhaven, while he was studying at St. John's University. John and Mary wed in 1959, the beginning of a beautiful 55-year marriage between them. Their sons John and Robert were born in 1960 and 1961 while John Sr. was studying at MIT. James and Michael followed in 1963 and 1968.



They settled in Westfield, NJ, where Mary has lived for 60 years. After focusing on raising her 4 children, Mary pursued her dream of getting a college degree and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in education from Montclair State University. She went on to become a dedicated teacher at McKinley Elementary School, Westfield High School and Roselle Catholic High School. In retirement, Mary volunteered her time with St. Joseph Social Service Center in Elizabeth, teaching computer skills to the underserved in the community. Mary and John were always very active with St. Helen's in Westfield, where Mary taught CCD and served as a Eucharistic Minister.



Over the years, their family grew to include 4 daughters-in-law and eleven grandchildren: John and his wife Denise's Eric, Avril and Allison; Robert and his wife Michele's Brian, Kimberly and Katherine; James and his wife Lisa's Pamela, Michael and Christopher; and Michael and his wife Anne's Dilyn and Shay.

A Visitation will be held at Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Ave., Westfield on Wednesday, July 7th from 4-7PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Helen's Roman Catholic Church, 1600 Rahway Ave., Westfield on Thursday, July 8th at 10AM. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Center for Hope Hospice, 1900 Raritan Rd., Scotch Plains, NJ 07076.

John E. Engelhart passed away at his home in Westfield on July 31, 2014 at the age of 78. John was born on December 19, 1935 in New York, NY, the youngest of three children. He is survived by his wife Mary after 55 years of marriage, and his four sons John, Robert, James and Michael along with 11 grandchildren. After receiving a B.S. in Chemistry from St. John's University in New York, he attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry. In 1993, he retired from his position as Senior Director of Product Development with Merck & Co. Inc. John is also survived by his sister Virginia of Southport, Connecticut. John was a devoted husband, father and friend, and throughout his 50 years in Westfield was active in St. Helen's RC Church, the Westfield Rescue Squad, Audubon, the Boy Scouts and numerous little league coaching positions. In his retirement he enjoyed golf, music, reading and travel and volunteered as a dispatcher at the Westfield Rescue Squad. A wake will be held Sunday, August 3rd from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Ave., Westfield. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, August 4th at 10 am at St. Helen's Church. In lieu of flowers contributions to the Westfield Rescue Squad would be appreciated.
