JUPITER, FLA. – Melvin L. Schumer, 95, passed away peacefully on Aug. 20, 2017, surrounded by his 10 children, their spouses and grandchildren.

Mel was born Feb. 27, 1922, the son of Arnold and Lorene Schumer in Perryville, Mo.

He served in World War II as a B-24 pilot, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross for his bravery in helping to save his crew after being shot down in Hungary in 1945. He flew a total of 30 missions.

"Mel" lived most of his life in Youngstown, owner of Poland Countryside Furniture which he founded in 1952.

Mel was preceded in death by his beloved, Jeanne Lyden Schumer, whom he married in 1945. Together they raised 10 children, Karen Schumer of Tequesta, Fla., Melvin Jr. of Carrollton, John Schumer (Karen Briach) of Sandwich, Mass., Greg Schumer (Bowie Rogers) of Jupiter, Margie Schumer Brady (JC Brady) of Mooresville, N.C., Brad Schumer (Gina Calabrese) of Poland, Jeanne Schumer Kelly (John Kelly) of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Joe Schumer (Mary Kalil) of Weidman, Mich., D. James Schumer, M.D. (Jan Ashton) of Columbus, and Patrick Schumer (Cathy Sarafin) of Columbus.
Melvin is survived by his 10 children; a brother, Hilary (Delores) Schumer; a sister, Roberta Ryan; 21 grandchildren; and over 20 great-grandchildren.

There will be a celebration of the life of Mel Schumer to be held Friday, Aug. 25, 2017, at Old Marsh Golf Club, 7500 Old Marsh Road in Palm Beach Gardens from 4 to 6 p.m. All are welcome.

Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
