Walter Joseph Coyne, 78, of Idaho Falls, died Nov. 13, 2005, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.



He was born June 12, 1927, in Salt Lake City to Thomas Francis Coyne and Christine Von Stein Coyne. He grew up and attended schools in Salt Lake City and graduated from West High School.



On Sept. 5, 1950, he married Verda Victoria Stucki in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. He worked as a grocery store manager at Safeway and owned the Food King grocery store in Idaho Falls. He owned and managed Pioneer Book Store in Idaho Falls for 25 years.



He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served as stake young men's president, as a counselor in the bishopric, on the stake high council and as bishop. He served a mission to the Netherlands and remained fluent in Dutch. He enjoyed reading and travel. Walt was friendly and outgoing and loved sharing his time with others -- especially his family and grandchildren.



Survivors include his children, Mary Ann Coyne of Salt Lake City, O. Norman (Jeanell) Coyne of Ammon, Lisa Orme of Idaho Falls, and Holly (Lars) Elkin of Aberdeen; siblings, Thomas P. Coyne and Catherine Hatch, both of Salt Lake City; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Verda; and a sister, Betty Tovey.

A Life Well Lived

It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Catherine Cornelia Coyne Hatch, age 96, on January 14, 2025. Catherine passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness.

Early Life and Education

Catherine was born on November 21, 1928 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Thomas Francis and Christine Von Stein Coyne. Catherine was a graduate of West High School.

Professional Achievements

Catherine worked at ZCMI in the gift-wrapping department where she learned how to make beautiful bows and packages. Throughout the rest of her life people would often ask her to tie bows for them. After leaving ZCMI she went to work for the telephone company. Later she worked at Imperial Diaper Service to help support the family.

Personal Life and Interests

Catherine's early life was during the Great Depression. Even though her family didn't have much she was a happy child. Catherine was a loving friend and neighbor and devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She married Kenneth Lane Hatch on September 21, 1951 in the Salt Lake Temple, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and service. Catherine took great pride in their family, and their home was always a place of warmth and welcome. Her hobbies included sewing, quilting, baking and planting flowers, but her favorite hobby was reading books. She especially loved a good mystery. She would often be reading several books at the same time and was intrigued with a good plot.

Catherine was known for her raisin bars, mint brownies and chocolate cake. Whether it was reading, cooking, traveling, or spending time with her family she approached everything with enthusiasm and dedication. Her friends and family will always remember Catherine for her kindness, humor, joyful spirit, and the way she made everyone around her feel special. Even in her later years neighbors and friends would come to visit and kept in touch with her.

Community Involvement

Catherine was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and believed deeply in giving quiet service to others. She was always doing something to help other people. She served in the Primary, Young Womens and Relief Society organizations. She and Ken served together at Highland Cove Care Center. Her service touched the lives of many, and she was an inspiration to all who knew her.

Catherine's legacy of generosity, friendship and service will continue to impact family, friends, neighbors and others who knew her for years to come.

A Legacy of Love

Catherine is survived by her daughter Allison (Lynn) Crane, son Tom (Shantrece) Hatch, daughter Lauren Hatch, brother Tom Coyne, 12 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Ken Hatch, parents Thomas and Christine Coyne, sister Betty Tovey and brother Walter Coyne. The loss of Catherine is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her, but her spirit will live on in the hearts and minds of those she touched.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on January 21, 2025 at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary Chapel located at 3401 Highland Drive in Millcreek, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to funeral services at 9:00 a.m.

As we say goodbye to our beloved Catherine, we take comfort in knowing that her life was one of purpose, love, and joy. Her memory will forever be a source of inspiration and strength.

Verda Victoria Stucki Coyne, 76, of Idaho Falls, died February 5, 2002, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. She was born July 30, 1925 at Coltman, Idaho to Jacob and Mary Anna Butikofer Stucki. She attended schools in Ucon. Following graduation from high school she attended the LDS School of Nursing in Idaho Falls. She married Walter Joseph Coyne on September 5, 1950 in the Idaho Falls Temple. She was a wife, mother, and homemaker and also worked as a registered nurse. She also served as President of the Parent Teacher Association at Linden Park Elementary School. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the Primary, Relief Society, and Young Women's organizations. She also served a mission to the Netherlands. She was an avid painter and enjoyed gardening, quilting, crocheting, and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Gerald Henry Tovey was born on September 19, 1932 in UtahG. He and Edna Betty Coyne were married on October 30, 1953 in UtahG. He died on April 2, 2022, at age 89, in UtahG.
