Biography

Paddy O'Brien was born in 1927 in Bohaun, Mayo, IrelandG. He died in September 2014, at age ~87, in Bohaun, Mayo, IrelandG.
The death has taken place of Paddy O'Brien, Bohaun, a well- known and popular member of the local farming community. Paddy, who was son of the late Phil and Winnie O Brien, received his primary school education in Sraheen National School. He was born at a time in Ireland when the daily farming chores were carried out manually. However, in the early 1970's Ireland's entry into the European Union beckoned a new era in which the introduction of the tractor and agricultural equipment paved the way for a better way of life for the farmer. Paddy welcomed those developments and he supported fundraising ventures for community building initiatives.

In his younger days he developed a great love for the land what it produced and reared. Paddy's speciality was hill sheep farming and that system of farming required farmers in those areas to work as a team on a number of occasions during the year when they gathered the sheep down to the lowland for dipping dosing and lambing.
Inevitably among the flocks of sheep coming from the hill would be a number of sheep belonging to other farmers outside the hill area. Paddy would identify the owners of those stray sheep from a horn or wool brand on the sheep and they were returned to their owners as soon as possible. One of Paddy's friends described him well when he said" Paddy was one of the best neighbours a person could wish for" Indeed, he lived in a caring community and was blessed with caring neighbours who visited him regularly and provided assistance when necessary.

Paddy's O Brien's journey through life was a unique story of a life lived with courage, sensitivity, enthusiasm, and incredible generosity and kindness. His love of people, nature, and his sense of humour reflected a man who was happy with his lot in life. While he loved and cared for all types of animals he had a special fondness for his dogs as he cared for them well.

In his earlier years he worked for periods in Mayo County Council making and maintaining roads leading into plots of bogland. On the fairdays he frequently walked his livestock to the fairs.

During his leisure time he loved to read the Mayo News, Connaught Telegraph and Irish Farmers Journal.

Paddy's life revolved around people and he loved the social occasion whether it was in one of the local pubs or meeting his neighbours after mass on a Sunday or attending a local fair.

Paddy will be remembered fondly by those who knew him as a man blessed with a great sense of honesty and integrity.

His funeral took place from Killawalla Community Centre to Saint Patricks Church, Killawalla where Requiem Mass was concelebrated by Fr Michael Farragher, Fr Michael Tracey, Fr. Tommy McGing and Fr. Jackie Conroy.

Paddy, who is survived by his sisters, Annie O Brien and Mary Barton, was laid to rest in Aughagower Cemetery.

To his sisters, Annie and Mary, nephews, Pat, Denis and Danny, Grand nieces, Helen and Katie, great grandniece, Bethany and many other relatives, neighbours and friends we extend our sincerest sympathies. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
