In 1795 the "Battle of the Diamond" occurs. After this, according to Jarlath Duffy who founded the Historical Society in Westport, a tribe of Duffys, sixteen families plus their own priest, whose name was Father Pat Duffy, left Armagh, went across into Donegal and then came south into Mayo. They settled in Doire Na Shi (close to Erni). This tribes distinguishing feature was that they spelled their name "6 Duithche".
Nellie McGing said that Tom Johnny and Jimmy Johnny were known as the 6 Duithch's. The remains of the houses (cabins) they built are still there. Mary Dolan talked with a local man who said that his father once told him that at one time every house in the village was a Duffy house.
However by 1818 there was not one Duffy left in Doire Na Shi. They were all evicted as the land was part of Lord A ltamount's estate.
It is thought that they then went across the mountain and got to Dereendaffderg which was then uninhabited. They would have approached Moore of Moore Hall and settled there. Pat and James Duffy (6 Duithche) were born in Armagh. James Dulfr's name is listed in the Tithe Appointment book of 1833.
