Betty Holloway Watkins, 80, a native and lifelong resident of Poquoson, passed away on Monday, June 12, 2017. She was a graduate of Poquoson High School, Class of 1956, and worked as a Dispatcher for the City of Poquoson for 25 years. Betty was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and sang in the church choir. She raised three boys, tirelessly carrying them to sporting practices and games. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Emma and Vaden Holloway; brothers, Robert Floyd Holloway and Arthur Vaden "Binks" Holloway, Jr.; and sisters, Ella Mae Hall, Sue Gorde, and Faith Joye. She is survived by her boys, Brad Watkins of Hampton, Andy Watkins and fiancé, Tammy Shaw of Poquoson, and Todd Watkins of Poquoson; grandchildren, Nick Watkins, Drew Watkins, Kyndall Watkins, and Jessica Shaw; sisters, Peggy Harris and Mary Barr; and canine companions, Frosty, Eddy, and Max. Visitation will be held Friday, June 16, 11:00 AM – 12:00 Noon, immediately followed by a Funeral Service, led by Rev. Charles R. Stacy, all at Trinity United Methodist Church, Poquoson. Burial will follow at Weston Cemetery. At other times, the family will receive friends at 11 Robert Bruce Rd., Poquoson. Claytor Rollins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. NEWPORT NEWS - Nelson Cornell 'Noonie' Watkins, Jr., 74, a native of Poquoson but a resident of Newport News since 1985, passed away Saturday, June 9, 2012, at Riverside Regional Medical Center, following a long illness.
Born March 7, 1938, in Hampton, he was the son of the late Nelson C. Watkins, Sr., and Ellen Jeanette Rowe Watkins of Poquoson. He was a 1956 graduate of Poquoson High School, where he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. He retired in 2003 as a quality control inspector with SupShip Newport News. He was an active lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Poquoson where he held several offices. Nelson was a member of the Wesley Fellowship class and the George W. Amos Men's Chorus. He was Past Master of the Poquoson Lodge No. 49. He was instrumental in starting Poquoson Youth football and coached Little League Baseball. Nelson was an avid golfer and a devoted Redskin fan.
Nelson is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Janet Overstreet Watkins; his sons, Bradley C. Watkins, Andrew S. Watkins and fiancEe, Tammy Shaw, and Todd H. Watkins and wife, Tabitha; his stepsons, Bryan S. Godfrey, Jason P. Godfrey and wife, Jessica; grandchildren, Nicholas V. Watkins, Andrew J. Watkins, Kyndall B. Watkins, and Ella Godfrey; sister, Judith W. Moore and her husband, Dr. Alfred P., and her two children, Lori M. Harper and husband, Dr. William and Michael R. Moore and wife, Caroline; his brother-in-law, Kenneth W. Overstreet and son, Errin M. Overstreet. He is also survived by his former wife and mother of his sons, Betty Holloway Watkins.
Nelson had a great love for all of his grandchildren. They were the light of his life, and gave him so much pleasure during his illness. They will miss him so much.
The news is especially devastating to his son Brad in light of the death of his wife, Susan Puckett Watkins, on Nov. 12, 2011, and to his stepsons Bryan and Jason in light of the death of their father, Gilbert Wayne Godfrey, on Jan. 15, 2012.
In addition to his parents and daughter-in-law, Nelson was preceded in death by his devoted mother-in-law, Ella Pearson Overstreet; his grandparents, H. Essie and Pearl Forrest Watkins and Andrew F. and Daisy Rowe.
The family would like to thank Dr. Eugene Link and his nurses, Madie and Lynn, and Bobbie McGuire of the Cardiovascular Center for their exceptional loving care.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson, and other times at his home. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 12:30 p.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church by the Rev. C. Eugene Meek, the Rev. Milford C. Rollins, and the Rev. George T. Insley, Jr. Burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News.
