Biography

Helen Mulrow was born on April 1, 1921 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PennsylvaniaG. She and Romel Nicholas were married on April 22, 1944 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PennsylvaniaG. She died on April 8, 2016, at age 95, in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PennsylvaniaG.
(Research):Helen "Ellie" (Munroe) Nicholas, our family matriarch, was bid farewell on Friday, April 8, 2016. Her loss cost Ireland an icon and reduced by yet one more, those counted in America's "Greatest Generation." Like most from Ellie's era, she took pride in living her life in an understated fashion, making a difference subtly and without fanfare. Common values drove her: duty, honor, country, personal responsibility and marriage vows. Notwithstanding the unpretentious life she lived, Ellie made a difference in her community, and her electric blue eyes and warmth left a lasting and genuine impression on everyone she met. She was very active in her Catholic parish, St. Denis, holding positions as president of the Women's Guild and Parent-Teachers Guild. She was a member of the Christian Mother's Society at St. Denis and St. Michael's and the Ancient Order of Hibernians - Ladies Auxiliary (Division IX). She was also active in the American Field Service, an international student exchange program. In the early 1970s, Ellie and her husband, Romel, opened their home to international students. Such engagements were uncommon at the time, and after 45 years, Ellie remained close with her first exchange student, Candan Caner Muyan, and the Turkish family she called her own. She lived the Yeats' philosophy: "There are no strangers here; only friends you haven't yet met." Though Ellie was a true Irish-American, she embraced Eastern European cooking and under her mother-in-law's tutelage she became an accomplished cook and baker. She even put a French-pastry flair on her famous nut roll and other culinary delights. On a personal level, Ellie was the beloved wife of her late husband of 67 years, Romel.

Ellie was also a devoted mother, grandmother, godmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was born April 1, 1921, to Thomas Munroe and Mary Joyce, and was preceded in death by her loving husband, Romel, and siblings, Francis Monroe and Sarah Slepak, and son-in-law, Joel G. Heimlich. She is survived by her children, Judy/Juliet Heimlich and Romel (Dr. Stephanie) Nicholas and her grandchildren, Sarah, Romel, Mary and John, as well as sister Theresa Stripay, and many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 14, 2016, in the DANIEL F. BEKAVAC FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORY, 4504 Walnut St., Versailles Borough, McKeesport, PA 15132 (412-678-3454). Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 15, 2016, in St. Michael's Parish, Elizabeth Township. Committal will follow to Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Elizabeth Township.
