In America, there was disagreement as to what surname spelling to use. At New York port, one group of relatives was told to use the spelling "Monroe" (but pronounced "Mun row"), as the arrivals were Illiterate and spoke with an Irish accent they accepted the spelling; several other groups of relatives, however, used the spelling "Munroe". This continues to present day in USA - there are Monroe's and Munroe's.

The Irish burial records from Rosshill Cemetery near Clonbur, County Galway, show the surname spelling as "Mulroe".
