UTAHVILLE FLIER KILLED PASSANGER HURT, Utahville, PA, April 3
A 21-year-old Utahville pilot was killed and his 21 year-old passenger critically injured this afternoon when their plane crashed along the highway between Glasgow and Mountaindale.
Charles J. Shaw, 21, son of Charles and Margaret Shaw, Utahville, Clearfield County, was instantly killed. Homer Troxell, 21, son of Blair and Postmistress Ethel Troxell, Utahville, was listed as critical at Philipsburg State Hospital, still having not regained consciousness from the time of his admission. Troxell suffered a possible fracture of the skull, possible internal injuries, and compound fractures of both legs. Both young men were pinned in the wreckage and extricated from the plane by passing motorists following the crash at 2:30p.m.
State police from Ebensburg detail, said the accident was apparently caused by the plane flying at low altitude. There were several witnesses to the accident, police said, and all stated that the place was flying at low altitude. The plane was coming down in a spiral glide with the motor cut off, and when the pilot gunned the motor to gain altitude, the plane went into a 180-degree turn and crashed, police said. It tore through telephone wires and landed on the highway southeast of Glasgow on the highway between Mountaindale and Glasgow. Shaw was piloting a two passenger Aeronca place, owned by C.P. Rutter, Utahville. He (Shaw) had been issued a private license last October, police said. An unconfirmed report tonight said that he had 300 hours in the air during the war when he served as a gunner
