NOTE: This was developed 20 years ago and was beyond my skills to update. Due to use of tables, some browsers may have trouble with this page. I developed it so it looked good on my machine and my daughters (2 different size monitors, different resolutions, different browsers) but can't claim it looks right in all browsers.

I got copies today of the 1830 Census for Norther District of New York, St. Lawrence County, township of Ostwegatchie, page 239. The copies are barely legible in the copy, perhaps the original is easier to read. Hence, I'll just lay out what it says:
John McGing as head of household, with 1 boy under 5 years and 1 male between 20 and 30. There was also one girl under 5 and 1 woman between 20 and 30.
However, it clearly shows John McGing as the householder, and he should be the male between 20 and 30. I would expect the woman to be a spouse and the 2 children, a boy and a girl, to be theirs.
1840 US Census for Washington DC, page 76
H McGinn, householder
1 white female between 50 and 60
1 white female between 60 and 70
1840 US Census, Pennsylvania
Philadelphia County
Northwest Ward, Philadelphia City, page 191
Paterick McGinng
1 white male between 50 and 60
1 white female between 50 and 60
US Census records are pretty neat. On the main page I have a graphic copy of an 1850 census from Massachusetts with a McGing family. I have also have some other US census reports, but they are paper copies that simply don't clean up or scan well. So I'm going to transcribe them here.

Line | McGing, Thomas | 7 | M | W | OH
Line | McGing, Mary A. | 6 | F | W | OH |
So let's examine this data.
Name | Age | Place of Birth | Date of Birth | Comments |
McGing, James | 56 | Ireland | abt 1794 | Emigrated to US 1828 or earlier |
McGing, Margaret | 46 | Ireland | abt 1804 | Emigrated to US 1828 or earlier |
McGing, William | 22 | PA | abt 1828 | In PA by 1828 |
McGing, James | 20 | PA | abt 1830
McGing, John | 16 | PA | abt 1834
McGing, Robert | 12 | PA | abt 1838
McGing, Thomas | 7 | OH | abt 1843 | Moved to Ohio between 1838-1843 |
McGing, Mary A | 6 | OH | abt 1844 |
So where did they live in PA? If we can find that, we could track them on the Federal 1830 Census, and maybe in 1840 Census. Or we could try 1840 Census for Ohio for this same place. And take a look at 1860 for this area, see if they stayed in the area. There are 5 sons. Wonder where their descendants are?
I also found Ohio Marriage records that show that a Bridget McGinn of Muskingum County married John Finn on January 16, 1854. There was also a Hannah McGinn of Muskingum County who married a John Slawter on September 18, 1859. Are these "real" McGinns or McGings going by McGinn? Don't know, but there was a McGing presence in Muskingum County, so it's possible.

I have no idea where in Ireland these 2 women came from, and of course haven't
a clue (yet) on how they ended up (married, moved from area etc.)

I find I have an interest in Philip and Austins of either McGing or McGinn surnames because they could be related. I have nothing on this family, but perhaps later it will be useful.

Notes: This is a very bad image. Note that Mr. McGing is listed as natural born US citizen, meaning he was born sometime about 1816 in Missouri.
Update: A nice woman did a lookup for me, and this is what she told me: There is nothing in the 1850, 1860 or 1880 census books. I have the transcribed versions and there is nothing even close....McGee, McGinley, McGinnis McGirk and McGun are all that starts McG.... Nothing in wills or marriages in Moniteau Co. Birth records were not kept in Mo. that early. 1883 they made an attempt for birth records at a county level. Most were not recorded. In 1910, Mo. made it a state law and the Bureau of Vital Statistics were formed. In 1816, Missouri was just opening up for land sales and was sparsely populated. Mostly around the St. Louis area.
I wrote to the Moniteau County Historical Society and here is what Betty Williamson, Library/Genealogy Chair had to say:
"Received your letter today and have checked the marriage records, cemetery records, birth and death records and do not find this name listed anywhere."
"I also checked three different history books: Goodspeeds 1889 History of Moniteau, Cole, Morgan, Osage and etc. counties. Found a George Mageune on page 638 for a land entry in Osage Co MO. Also checked the 1936 History of Moniteau CO by J.E. Ford and nothing found. And finally checked the 1980 Moniteau CO History and again, I found no mention of this name."
"In the 1850 census of Cole County Missouri I found on page 66, the mention of Martin McGune, 30 born in Ireland - a resident of the Missouri State Penitentiary."
"I have tried to check for any spelling that would sound like McGing and the above may be of use to you, but I always try to send something that might help. Sorry I could not be of more help. Have never heard the name before."
I also did a search of the real 1850 census for this county and have come up
empty. What this seems to indicate, based on this evidence, is that this family
came to this area after 1860 and left before 1880. I wonder if the youngest
was baptized somewhere in this vicinity? I wonder if, using the names of the
families that came before and after them in the census, one could identify their
neighbors, therefore their location and then have land records to check?
