NameConcat. She died in January 2014, at age 82, in Glenmask, Mayo, IrelandG.
Glenmask, Tourmakeady
Former teacher May McGing, Glenmask who died recently was daughter of the late Martin and Julie Feeney, Carramore, Hollymount. From an early age she dreamed of becoming a teacher and that dream came true when she graduated as a teacher from Mary Immaculate College Limerick in 1950. She taught in a number of schools which included the following national schools Kilmaine, Innishturk, Glenmask, Roxboro, Sraheen, Cloonliffen and Innislyre. Her teaching career spanned forty years, Life in Ireland was different at that time. Cars were scarce and people had to rely on the bicycle to get them to their destination.

When she was teaching in the one teacher school in Glenmask she recalled making the long journey by bicycle (almost 30 miles) from her home in Carramore, Hollymount through Ballinrobe. Partry each Monday morning to Glenmask N.S. and the same return journey each Friday evening

In 1957, she married local farmer, Sonny McGing and they were blessed with four children two of whom died as babies. May's strong Christian faith helped her through those sad times. In her heart she had a great devotion to praying the rosary each night. While she was an excellent homemaker inside the home she also helped with the saving of the hay and the turf in the bog. During her leisure time she enjoyed the occasions when she travelled to the local singing lounges where she enjoyed listening to music and dancing traditional dances.

In her heart she had a special place for her grandchildren, Aisling, Kenneth, Tara, Gary and Darren and they in turn cherished her love, advice and encouragement.

May was blessed with natural teaching qualities. Her motherly, caring personality brought out the best in every pupil she taught. She instilled in her pupils a strong love of learning.
Following her retirement from teaching she continued to enjoy life with her cherished husband, Sonny up to 2002 when he passed to his eternal reward.

May's death has cast a shadow of sadness over her family and those who knew her on the journey through life. However, much comfort will be gained from the fact that she was a woman, who through her lifetime, made a positive contribution to her family and community.

During her funeral Mass celebrated in Tourmakeady Church by Fr John Kenny and Fr Des Grogan the Lessons were read by Darren and Tara McNeely. The prayers of the faithful were read by Tommy Killeen, Shona Berry, Mary Teresa McNeely and Imelda McNeely
Gifts reflecting aspects of May's life were carried to the altar by Nonie Dolan, Mary McGing, Annie May McNeely, Aisling McGing and Nora Julia McNeely

The funeral liturgy was enriched with music and song by Ed Muldoon.
May was predeceased by her three sisters and two brothers.

May is survived by her daughter Mary Teresa McNeely, son Michael Joe McGing, son-in-law Austin McNeely, daughter-in-law Mary McGing, sisters Ann O'Mallley and Tess Willis, sister-in-law Nonie Dolan, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and her many other relatives and friends to whom we extend our sincerest sympathies.

May she rest in peace.

The dates don't match, but...

July 26, 1903 Michael McGing, age 20 and listed as single, arrived in New York City on the ship Umbria, having sailed steerage from Queenstown. Westport is listed as his place of residence. His occupation was shown as a laborer. His destination was Butte Montana, where he was to stay with his cousin Thomas Gavin, 711 Montana St., Butte Montana. Note also that one Michael Gavin, age 20, of Westport was also traveling to Butte Montana and was also staying with Thomas Gavin. (

Thomas Gavin (19 Nov 1891-about 1936) unmarried. Immigrated to Butte, Montana. He probably left the area during the strike of 1918 and headed for Tacoma where he most likely worked as a longshoreman. He died in Tacoma, Washington.
