/b»Not much is known about Tom Gavan (Gavin). His name was on the rent rolls of the Marquis of Sligo in the Griffith's Valuation of 1855. He paid one of the highest rents in the townland, £10. His house was located at the top of the rise, just across the river from the Big Meadow, an area bulldozed not too long ago. He had at least one son, Patrick. His wife's name is unknown. Tom left Ireland for the USA, probably during the depression years of the late 1860s or 1870s. His son, Patrick, married Anne McNulty, daughter of Tom McNulty of Ballaburke, in 1865. Anne's brother[s] immigrated to New York. Their children formed a well-known Irish American trio, known as the McNulty family (Peter, Eileen, and "Ma"), which recorded Irish and Irish-American songs popular in the early part of the 20 sup»th /sup» century. Precursors to the Clancy Brothers, they were the most famous Irish performing group in the eastern United States from the 1930s to the 1950s, and they were heard frequently on the radio and in concert. In the 1950s, Peter McNulty hosted a Sunday morning radio show in New York City called "Irish Showboat." The McNulty family had a pervasive influence on the Celtic music of Newfoundland from the 1930s to the 1970s, where they were extremely popular.


[Have heard from Mike Gavin of Clinton Township, Michigan that an Austin Gavin in his family brought two Tom Gavins, each with a wife named Mary, to the USA in 1859. A Thomas Gavin married Mary Maguire on 27 January 1856. The marriage listing originally suggested that this couple was from Tonlegee. An update lists their townland as Lachderg, which is near Erriff. This is probably not our Thomas.].
