Proprietor of County Mayo News. (Research):Born on 23 February 1866, he worked initially as the assistant clerk for the Westport Union and, reputedly, was a member of the IRB for a short time. Although a co-founder of the Mayo News in 1892, he did not become very politically active until after the formation of the United Irish League, when he became known as a good platform speaker at land reform meetings and an outspoken opponent of Irish involvement in the Boer war. Subsequently he strongly supported the anti-enlistment campaign, befriended Arthur Griffith (qv), and came to sympathise with Sinn Féin. In 1910 he became the proprietor and editor of the Mayo News, a position he held until his death. During 1914– 15 he began openly denouncing his brother William for his support of Britain in the war, thereby creating a lasting hostility between them. Owing to his Sinn Féin sympathies, Patrick was arrested in the wake of the 1916 rising and was held in Frongoch and subsequently Reading jail. After his release in December 1916, the Mayo News took a more openly pro-Sinn Féin stance. Its relentless denunciations of the British government led ultimately to the paper's offices being smashed and Doris's home being occupied by the Black and Tans in February 1921, thereby forcing him to go into hiding. Although not totally opposed to the Irish Free State, during the treaty disputes he sympathised strongly with the line taken by Éamon de Valera (qv), primarily because he believed the treaty settlement was undemocratically forced on the Irish people. By the late 1920s his paper was expressing support for Fianna Fáil and openly denouncing the W. T. Cosgrave (qv) administration in the strongest terms, claiming it was indifferent to the rural poor. After 1932 his paper continued to adopt a generally pro-Fianna Fáil editorial policy, although it was often very critical of the authoritarianism of the Fianna Fáil administration. Patrick J. Doris died 24 February 1937 in Westport, Co. Mayo, and was survived by three children. His wife, Sabina (née McGing), predeceased him by eight years.

Reposing in Navin's Funeral Home, Westport (F28 XR61), on Monday, July 31st, from 5pm with removal at 6.30pm to St. Patrick's Church, Lecanvey, to arrive at 7pm. Shock and deep sadness at sudden death of much-loved local figure John McGing

THE funeral of a highly regarded member of an old Westport family gets underway later this evening, Thursday, January 19, when the local community will gather to pay respects to the late John McGing.

John McGing will forever be associated with, and is most widely recognised, as the former long-time landlord of the oldest public house in Westport, J McGing's on High Street. He passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at his home at Corrig, Sandyhill, on Tuesday, January 17.

Due to turn 70 this year, John, who often told of how he was born in the year of the 'Big Snow' (1947), retired from his family's business on High Street in 2006 when the premises was taken over by Anthony and Claire Finnegan. To this day the exterior retains its original colours and look, and internally the pub retains the authentic Irish atmosphere that John and generations of his family had created and worked to maintain. A testament to the McGings' endeavour and standing in the community is that his name remains above the door.

McGing's was an olde-world establishment, a family-run business with a shop out front and a pub to the rear. The business was synonymous with fair and market days in Westport in times gone by, when droves of people converged on High Street. The wider McGing family were very well-known throughout the community, and were long-term residents of High Street, where they owned many properties and operated several businesses, gaining them huge respect as one of Westport's oldest families.

While the current McGing's pub retains much of the charming traditional interior, despite being extended and refurbished, it was, until John's final day at work, operated in the old traditional way, without many modern conveniences.

Famed for his height, neighbours on High Street described John this week as a 'gentle giant' and a 'witty and engaging character', who loved socialising, animals (many recalled his favourite dog, a terrier called Tot) and music, particularly traditional Irish music. Along with his wife, Margaret, John travelled widely in recent years. He was also known to be a man of great intellect and a fantastic storyteller, as well as a man with a great talent for fixing items and who could turn his hand at anything.

In an international publication in 2001, 'The Spirit of Rural Ireland', author Christopher Somerville and photographer Chris Coe visited McGing's on High Street. Here is an extract from their recollection of that day:

"John rises in a series of right angles form his seat by the little iron stove at the top of the bar, where he sits out the cold winter afternoons. A year or so back it would have been Tot, the tiny spherical pub dog, who reached the customer first with a stiffly wagging tail. But Tot is now guardian of the great pub stove in the sky, and so it is John alone who greets the incomer.
"John has the chart and substance of Westport's history in his head, and will deliver it to you if he thinks you will be interested and if he judges you to be a fit recipient of his facts and conjectures… He also pours the best pint of Guinness in County Mayo; a fighting statement, but a considered judgement… McGing's is essentially a talking pub, a place for conversation elliptical or sharp, punctuated with bursts of laughter, into which everyone is sooner or later drawn… There are no heroes leaning on John McGing's bar, but this is where the lucky stumbler-in gets a glimpse of what that famous music, and that celebrated Irish craic, are really founded on."

Reposing at McGing's Funeral Home this evening (Thursday), January 19, from 5pm to 7pm, John's remains will be arriving at St Mary's Church in Westport for 12.30pm Requiem Mass tomorrow, Friday, January 20. He will be laid to rest afterwards in Aughagower Cemetery.

John McGing is sadly missed by his loving wife, Margaret; brothers, Philip and Neil; sister, Nuala Scott; nephew, James Scott; Margaret's children; his mother-in-law, Kathleen Callan (Monaghan); sister-in-law; brothers-in-law; relatives, neighbours in Sandyhill and High Street and friends.
