Obituary For Marguerite Mecca Gibbons
Marguerite Mecca Gibbons, of Raleigh, died on July 8, 2023 after suffering for years from Parkinson's disease. She leaves behind her husband, Thomas, and their three children: Marguerite (Tom) Ambrozevitch, Thomas (Elisabeth) Gibbons, and Christine (Rob) Stewart, all residents of North Carolina. She also leaves four grandchildren: Thomas Ambrozevitch, Nicole Speir, Sarah Nichols, and Christina Gibbons; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Marguerite was born in Dunmore, PA, on November 3, 1933, then moved to The Bronx, NY, at an early age. In 1955, she married Tom, and they relocated to Queens, NY. After eight years they moved to Ramsey, NJ and in 1975 came to Raleigh, NC.
Upon arrival in Raleigh, Marguerite and family joined St. Raphael Catholic Church. She became very active in church activities including Ministry to the Sick and Invalid, teaching Sunday School, and Eucharistic Ministry. In 1976, she, along with 2 other Parishioners, created a successful parish Colonial Day Celebration for the Bicentennial.
Early In the 1990's she embarked on opening a Catholic bookstore that eventually became a success as "In His Name." The business continues to provide churches in the Diocese with Catholic supplies to assist in their ministries. In August 2011, Bishop Burbridge awarded her the prestigious Benemerenti medal for her years of service to the Catholic community.
A Visitation will be held from 6pm to 8pm on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at Renaissance Funeral Home, 7615 Six Forks Rd., Raleigh, NC 27615. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church, 12333 Bayleaf Church Rd., Raleigh, NC 27614 on Wednesday morning at 10am. Private family entombment to follow.
