Pensioner Edith Bedworth was rescued from her smokefilled home in Maud Road, West Bromwich, after neighbour Dawn Holderness raised the alarm.

A MAN was killed today as flames tore through a house in a mystery blaze.

A firefighter was also taken to hospital from the house in Rowley Regis.

The man was found dead in the lounge.

The blaze ripped through the terraced house in Royal Oak Road, Springfield Estate, at 3.30am.

Friend and neighbour Joseph Hodgkins said he and other residents had been left stunned by the tragedy.

He said: 'I saw the flames coming from his house this morning and dialled 999 but it seems he was already dead when the fire service pulled him out.

'Martin was a good man who I've known for 16 years. He has a son Daniel who is in the army in Canada.

Fire crews forced their way into the house and battled to resuscitate the dead man.

He was carried out through thick smoke but was declared dead shortly after at Russells Hall Hospital.

A firefighter was also taken to hospital for precautionary checks after giving mouth-tomouth at the scene.

'The house was doubleglazed and all locked up, so the severe fire was potentially very dangerous for firefighters because it could have caused a backdraft.

'It is a very tragic incident.'

The woman, in her 80s, fell asleep when a fire started in the microwave at 1.30pm yesterday and was only roused when firefighters carried her to safety.
