It is known that he served for Confederate forces initially during the Civil War. His parents and brother were living in Delaware. Family oral history states that at the request of his mother. He switched to the federal forces so that he and his brother would not be fighting against one another.

He is listed in 1870 as a resident of Isle of Wight County,Newport District, with his wife and children....although they are documented as Jehu being born in New York!!! Maybe one of the children gave the info, all other data as far as individual names appears correct.

Listed as a farmer inthe 1880 census for Isle of Wight , his birth place is also listed as Delaware.
Record in archives in Richmond Virginia shows a Jehu B. Furman married in 1853in Virginia. Reel 15 Vital Statistics. No wife's name is listed because the page was torn. This record was from the minister who married Jehu in Elizabeth City County, Virginia whose name was Nathaniel L. Giddings. Further copies ofthe records reveals his spouse as Martha Ann Insley.

He is also recorded in a land deed transaction in page 256 Isle of Wight Virginia, a Brooks Roberttransfer of deed B & S Furman, Jehu B. in 14 December 1886. On March 14, 1898 he is listed as deceased on a deed selling the property in his name along with surviving wife and his child

He apparently died after suffering a stroke since his cause of death is listed as paralysis.
