Blair Beals has been out of town for the past few days working, butduring his absence everything has been moving along smoothly at hishome on Ridge Street. When Blair returns home, however, there will bea young man there to meet him who was not there when he left. The boyarrived in town this morning and both he and the mother are quietlywaiting to see what the old man has to say about it.
December 31st, 1897 - Frank H. Beales entered Girard College onScholarship. Girard College is an independent, coeducational, collegepreparatory 5-day boarding school for grades 1-12. All students areawarded full scholarships. It is a school for children in need whoare without one or both parents. Girard is located in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania.
1900 census: Name "Frank Beals" listed as a student, age 10,birthdate Nov 1889; living at Girard College in PhiladelphiaPennsylvania; born in PA, both parents born in PA.
1905 - Left Girard College on "the 15 year list." That phrase refersto fellows who were not on track to graduate at the age of 18, so theyleft school at the age of 15."
After Girard college, Frank Heverly Beals was employed by McClinticMarshall Construction Company in Rankin Station Braddock PA. Theconstruction company was bought by Bethlehem Steel. This maybe howFrank later ended up in Baltimore. If you look up Homestead, RankinStation, and Braddock, they are all part of the city of Pittsburghnow. The construction company, McClintic Marshall Construction Co.,that Frank worked for was also based in Pittsburgh.
The construction company was bought by Bethlehem Steel. This maybe howFrank ended up in Baltimore.
1908: Girard College document that lists that Frank was living withthe mother of Horace Knapp in Souderton PA on December 21, 1908. BothFrank and Horace C. Knapp are listed on the same census roll for 1910.

1930 Census: Occupation listed as Orderly. Worked in Hospital. Lastname spelled as "Beale". and birthdate is 1902 instead of 1895.Lived at 1417 Lexington Street. It is particularly hard to locateFrank on this particular census as Frank and his parents are listed asbeing from Maryland, not PA. I believe that this was an error made bythe census taker.
1937 Frank applied for a Social Security Number. On this applicationhe supplied his parent's names: Blair Beales and Annie FlorenceHeverly.
1940 Census: Occupation listed as Structural Iron Worker, last job inBridge Construction, $588 salary. At time of census he had been outof work for 8 weeks.

From The Baltimore Sun newspaper: "BEALES -- On August 11, 1948, athis late residence, 313 South Parish street, FRANK H., SR., belovedhusband of Margaret M. Beales (nee Ramsay). "Funeral from theFuneral Home of John J. Cowan & Son, 901-03 Hollins street, on Monday,August 16, at 2 PM. Internment in New Baltimore National Cemetery."
From grandson, John Louis Beales, Jr.
Grandfather was a WWI veteran who was trained as a male nurse. He waswounded and suffered for the rest of his life from shrapnel metal inhis body. He was hospitalized and died in Howard Veterans Hospitalwhich was on Ft. Howard, a small island in the Chesapeake Bay verynear Baltimore. The "H" in his name was for Heverly. He is buried inNational Cemetery on Frederick Avenue in Baltimore County; in plot1022. Grandma was laid next to him. I am not sure, but I think hisrank was Sergeant. He would have died between 1947/48 and 1951. Dadsaid grandfather died around the time Dad was 17 (1947/48) and beforeI was born (1951).
Dad said his father often rode the streetcars to work which would putWicomico Street within the riding territory. Uncle Frank, Frank H.Beales, Jr., was a WWII veteran; a Marine sergeant fighting theJapanese in the South Pacific. Grandfather and Grandma had 5 childrentwo of which died as very small children. These children weresandwiched between Uncle Eddie and Dad. I know where they are buriedin a plot with Grandma's uncle on the old part of Loudon Cemetery onFrederick Avenue in Baltimore City not far from Irvington where Donnaand I lived. I do not remember clearly the name on the marker or theplot number, but I found it once before at the records office of thecemetery.. I mention this because they may have a record ofgrandfather there as a parent of the two deceased children.
However, I do not have a clear memory of what he did to earn a livingin the latter years of his life, but I suspect he would have beenphysically limited due to the pain from the shrapnel. Dad said hisfather drank a lot because of the pain.
