It is noteworthy that George Eveleigh mentioned only two of his six children in his will. Traditions in the family state that the first son, George died young. Samuel, or Samuel Henry, was the oldest surviving son but no reference whatsoever was made to him in his father's will. This fact sustains the family tradition still prevalent among the descendants that Samuel Henry's father disowned him because of his support of the American Colonies during the Revolutionary War. There is some intimation, however, that George Eveleigh finally sympathized with the colonies, but his descendants maintain, nevertheless, but no reconciliation ever occurred between Samuel Henry Heverly and his father.

Biography

George Bell was born in 1734 in Northern IrelandG. He and Mary Bell were married in 1756. He died in March 1816, at age ~82, in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, USAG.
Basic Record Proves Active Duty. The military record of Capt GeorgeBell can be found in PA Archives, Series I Vol 6 pg 485 & in Series V,Vol 6 pg 322, 324 & 335. In 1777 George Bell is listed as Capt for Co#8 for Derry Twp, Mifflin Co 5th Battalion under the leadership of ColArthur Buchanan. Source: Mother Cumberland, by Raymond M Bell pg 24.

Was a captain in the militia.

At the outbreak of the Revolution War Bell was living in a cabin in a small clearing in Jacks Valley-- "a settlement -- exposed to the inroads of the savages." The cabin was near Jacks Mounain and was located by a big spring along a small branch of Jacks Creek. The Penn Twp., Northumberland Co., - Derry Twp., Cumberland Co. line ran through George Bell's land (now Decatur Twp., Mifflin Co.). He with his wife and family had been living on the frontier for ten years. On the frontier the war was fought with the Indians, so that the settlers had to be constantly on guard. Tradition tells of a scout riding up at 2 a.m. with the news of Indians in the section, warning the militia to march. On one or more occasions George Bell
took his family to Paxton for safety.

Most of our information about George is during 1778, the most crucial year of the Pennsylvania frontier. The list of men who comprised Company 8 of teh Fifth Battalion of Cumberland County Associators July 21, 1777 shows George Bell as Captain. (Penna Archives, Series 5, Volume 6, pgs 322, 32k, 330, 335.) The officers of the Fifth Battalion were Col. Arthur Buchanan, Lt. Col. Alexander Brown, Major Alexander Mcllhattan.

Eighth Company: Captain GEORGE BELL, 1st Lt. James Young, 2nd Lt. Marshal Stanley, Ensign JOHN BELL. Privates (Nearly from Derry Twp., Cumberland Co.)

One of the men (David Barr) (S6564) who received a pension in later years, told of enlisting in April 1778 and said that he "served two months in Capt Bell's Company.

There is a lot of references to George Bell's service. (Research):http://services.dar.org/Public/DAR_Research/search_adb/?action=full&p_id=A008701

At the close of the Indian Wars, George Bell settled on adjoining land. Thls land was reached by following the Susquehanna up to the Juniata River, then up the Juniata to Old Town (Lewistown). Forster*s land was on Klshacoquillas Creek, which enters the Juniata at Lewistown. George Bell no doubt made a number of exploring trips to this section before settling.

George Bell

George Bell was a son of William Bell of Paxton, Dauphin County. The Bells were Scotch-Irish in origin. William Bell settled at Paxton about 1738. He was a farmer and an elder in the Presbyterian Church. In 1778 he supplied the army at Valley Forge with two bushels of wheat and 24 bushels of forage. His six sons and two of his grandsons served in the Revolution. William Bell died October 29, 1783, and his sons all migrated west. John went first to Cumberland County and then to Washington County, Pennsylvania, where he died in 1810. George settled in Mifflin County (see below). William went to Erie where he became a judge. He died in 1813. Thomas died in Huntingdon County in 1814. Arthur settled first in Mifflin County, then Huntingdon County and finally Westfield, N. Y., where he died in 1834. Andrew died in Washington County in 1822. It was about 1765 that George B-l settled in Dry Valley, Derry Township. He held township offices in 1768 and 1769. In 1773 he moved to Jacks Valley and on May 6 improved the land on which he died 43 years later. This land is at Belltown, Decatur Township. In 1773 it was a part of Penn Township, Northumberland County. When Indian attacks in 1777 threatened Mifflin County, George Bell was one of eight captains chosen in the Fifth Battalion of Cumberland County militia. George Bell's company was in active service at Bald Eagle (Milesburg) April and May, 1778. About 1756 George Bell married Mary Bell of Paxton. They had five sons and five daughters.

John settled in Barree Township, Huntingdon County, where he died in 1833. There is no record of Jane except in her father's will. Mary and Sarah were never married. Arthur died in Dayton, Ohio, about 1850. The other sons and daughters lived in Mifflin County.

William Bell, born at Paxton about 1762, farmer in Decatur Township, married about 1790 Margaret McCartney of Juniata County, died September, 1827, leaving children: John Henderson, George, James, Sibella (Barr), William, Johnston, Margaret (Glass), Arthur. George Bell, born at Paxton about 1764, farmer in Decatur Township, married about 1789 Eleanor McClenahen, died about 1840, children: John, Mary (Carson), George, Eleanor (Scott), Elizabeth, James Johnston, William, Sarah (Ramsey), Charles McClenahen. James Bell, born about 1773, tailor in Decatur Township, married about 1795 Elizabeth Carson, died September 23, 1815, children: Catherine (Burdge), Mary (Hough), Margaret (Dorman), George Thompson, Jane (Stayner), John Davis. Elizabeth Bell, born about 1769, married February 1, 1791, Charles McClenahen (1760-1836), died in Decatur Township October 25, 1845. The McClenahen children were: Eleanor (Dorman), Sarah (Matthews), Elizabeth (Dorman), Mary (Glass), John. George Bell, Jane (Mitchell), William, Matilda (Bell). Margaret Bell, born about 1777, married about 1794 John McClenahen (1772-1830), died in Decatur Township February, 1850. The McClenahen children were: George Bell (died young), Elizabeth, John, William, James, Robert, Charles, George, Mary (McClenahen) Maxwell, Jane (Dorman), Andrew Clark, Harvey.

George Bell, Sr.

George Bell, Sr. died in the spring of 1816 in Decatur Township (Pennsylvania) at the home of his daughter, Margaret. Tradition says that although he was past eighty, his hair was not gray. He was strong physically, and six feet tall. He was a good singer, and was known for "being particular." The date of death of his wife, Mary, is not known. She was not living in 1815.

The will of "George Bell, Senior of Decatur Township" was written on December 29, 1815. It is recorded at Lewistown, Will Book 2, Number 282. He named ten children.

The bequests were:

"to my son, John Bell, one dollar;" "to my daughter Jane, one dollar;" to my son William Bell, that part of the tract of land which he now lives on;" to my "son George Bell the old land and improvement by him;" to my "two daughters Mary and Sarah the third of the grain raised on old improvement for their use as long as they shall live" and "all my movable property;" to "the heirs of my son James Bell that part of the land which he hath cleared;" to my "son Arthur Bell that land which he hath cleared;" to "my daughter Margaret and her offsprings for their use that part of the improvement which hath been made by her said husband John McClenahen;" to my "daughter Elizabeth, one dollar." None of the land was to be sold except to George's children or grandchildren. William and George Bell (Junior) were to be executors. The will was filed for probate April 15, 1816.

At the time of his death, George Bell, Sr., was survived by nine of his children, over half a hundred grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. He had seen his son, James Bell, die in 1815; a grandson, James Bell, die in 1813; and a great-grandson, George Bell, die in 1814. Of the five daughters of George, Sr., there is no record of Jane expect in the will of her father. She probably married and "went west" soon after the Revolution. Mary and Sarah ("Sade") never married and kept house for their father. The dates of their deaths are not known, but Mary probably died in Decatur Township in the 1830's and Sarah in Armagh Township at the home of George Bell III in the 1840's. "Aunt Sade" was said to be lame. Elizabeth (Betsy) Bell married Charles McClenahen, a farmer, who died in Decatur Township in 1836. Margaret (Peggy) Bell married his brother, John McClenahen, a wheelwright, who died in Decatur Township in 1830. (see page 43.)

We find the following full account of the drowning of the wife and daughter
of Mr. Derr, which we noticed briefly in our columns at the time of the occurence,
in the Perry Advocate and Press.

A sad case of drowning of mother and daughter occurred on last Friday noon
on the Susquehanna Division of the Pennsylvania canal, in Wattstown-
about a mile above the Acqueduct.

An old gentleman named Derr lived with his family in a small house on the
towpath side of the canal, and on Friday forenoon wife and daughter
crossed the canal in a skiff, and went to the fields for blackberries.
About 2 o'clock they returned with their buckets filled with berries, and attempted to
recross the canal in the skiff. Either the mother or the daughter requested the other
to take the buckets and cross the canal in the skiff and then return for the other,
but finally both concluded to cross at the same time.

The skiff, which was old and leaky, filled with water immediately, and Mr. Derr,
from the opposite side, went to the rescue of his wife and daughter. In attempting
to rescue them, his wife caught him around the neck and endangered his life.
He prevailed on her to let go and take hold of the skiff, which she did, but all three
being on the same side, the skiff was overturned and all let go.

Mr. Derr an old and sickly man then made for the shore, which he reached in an
exhausted and fainting condition. When he recovered, the bodies of his wife and
daughter had disappeared. Mr. Derr's cries for assistance were heard by some
harvest hands on Haldeman's Island, who ran to his assistance, wading through
the branch of the Susquehanna but arrived too late to save the unfortunate mother
and daughter. The body of the daughter was found about one hour after the
occurrence, but the water had to be partially drawn off and the canal dragged
before the body of the wife was recovered at 10 o'clock on Friday night.

About a year ago Mr. Derr came from Baltimore in search of work, and settled
in Watts township. He was in indignent circumstances, but had seen better days.
His wife was an intelligent lady, and his daughter, who had just passed her 15th year,
was a beautiful and intelligent young lady. Mr. Derr has the sympathies of the
community in this, his great bereavement.

Joseph Wait, Esq, of New Buffalo, was sent for and after summoning a jury
held an inquest on Friday morning - the jury rendering a verdict of accidental drowning.
