James McClenahen
M, #9841
Family
Biography
The McClenahens of Mifflin County, PA are descended from two brothers: Charles and John. They came to Mifflin County in about 1785. Tradition says their parents are James and Eleanor (Eleanor's maiden name was Cunningham). The main source of the data is from the Revolutionary War Pension application submitted by Charles (W2960, National Archives).
The records say that the family came to America from County Donegal, Ireland in 1762 and in 1779 was living in Mahoning Twp. Northumberland County, PA, now the Danville region. IN 1791, Charles married Elizabeth Bell at the home of her father, George Bell, in what is now Decatur Twp., Mifflin County, PA. About 3 years later, Charles' younger brother, John, married Elizabeth's younger sister, Margaret.
The papers also tell about Charles' 6 months of service in the Revolutionary War. He served under Captain Thomas Gaskins in Colonel Cook's PA Regiment. They went to Wyoming in Luzerne County where they joined General Sullivan. They then marched up the north branch of the Susquehanna River to Tioga Point and burned Chemung (Elmira) and destroyed the cornfield of the Indians. In 1834, William Clark of Danville verified Charles' account.
The papers also tell of Charles' wedding to Elizabeth. Some of the guests included a number of Bells, (Mary, Sarah, John, Margaret, George, and Eleanor Bell), James Laudimore, and James McClenahen. The bride wore white linen and Andrew Green played the fiddle. The ceremony was performed by Squire James Burns.
His wife died in Armagh Twp. He was in Mahoning Twp. in 1779, in Decatur Twp. in 1787-91, in Union Twp., Mifflin County between 1791 and 1800. After 1800, he bought a farm adjoining George Bell in Decatur Twp. and lived there until his death.
More data about the Bell family can be found in "The Bell Family" by Raymond Martin Bell, 1941.

Michael Boyle
M, #9848, b. July 22, 1881, d. 1919
Parents
Biography
Michael Boyle was born on July 22, 1881 in Churchfield, Mayo, Ireland
G. He and
Ann Joyce were married. He died in 1919, at age ~38.
The case of Michael was a sad one. He moved to the U.S.A in the early 1900's.
We know he was still at home during the 1901 census, when he would have been 19
years old (although listed as 17 !).
His eldest brother John would, by this time, have been in the U.S.A, which for this period in history would have been considered unusual, since,as the eldest son, he would have been expected to have taken over the family holding.
The next eldest brother Thomas was at home during the 1901 census. He was listed as 23 years old (in fact, he was approaching 25). Since Thomas would be taking over the family holding, the only option left for Michael would be to join his brother John in the United States.
In America he met and married Annie Joyce (27A),who coincidently came from Maamtrasna/Derrypark in Tourmakeady, and perhaps even more coincidently her mother was also a Boyle '96 they were in fact 2nd cousins !
All was well in America until September 27th 1914, when his brother Thomas died in the family home '96 at the age of 38 '96 once again from T.B.
His brother John had become too successful in the mines to return home, and in truth he may have been sending money home on a regular basis to Tourmakeady to help support the family.
The youngest son Patrick (born Feb 4th 1889), and listed as 11 on the 1901 census would have been 24 at the time of Thomas's death. It was confirmed by the Boyles still living in Tourmakeady that Patrick also succumbed to T.B. '96 though the exact date is not yet known.
This would be correct, since Michael recieved the call to return with his wife to Tourmakeady to take over the family holding, despite many pleas from outsiders, who pointed out that death was running through the Boyle family, which had already claimed the lives of 2 of his brothers and 2 of his sisters. He returned !!
Little was he to know that over the next 2 years he would lose another sister Bridget (26) and his niece Honoria (36). Story has it that the writing was on the wall for Michael as early as November 1918.
During the birth of his 3rd son, he rushed over to the house of the local nurse to get her to help with the delivery of the baby. Such was her familiarity with the signs of T.B that she later proclaimed to a family member that he had also contracted the dreaded disease and that he would not have long left. She was proved right. Michael died soon after in 1919, leaving 3 small sons.
Annie Boyle (27a) died in January 1972. (Research):Civil Birth Record
