ACR Mourns the Loss of Sheila Aubin, 32 Years of Service
To hundreds of radiologists, hotel people, meeting managers and others, no last name was necessary. All they needed to hear was "Sheila."
But for all others, she was known as Sheila Ann Aubin, a highly respected employee of the American College of Radiology for 32 years. Sheila died March 28 after a short illness.
She was a native of Chicago and received her formal education in that city's parochial schools. After a series of temporary jobs, she joined the ACR staff as a secretary to the executive director, William C. Stronach. In 1970, she was named meetings manager, a position she held until her death. She also served as staff executive for the Association of University Radiologists, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, the American Roentgen Ray Society and other radiological groups. She is survived by her husband, Edward A. Aubin of Chicago.
The record doesn't truly reflect the impact she had on the College and on radiology during a third of a century. Sheila brought unlimited energy to every task. No job was ever too big, and no detail too small. Those who had the privilege of working with Sheila knew a woman with an infectious "can-do" attitude, boundless enthusiasm and uncompromising loyalty. If anyone attending one of "Sheila's" meetings had a problem, it became her problem and she solved it quickly.
She was born Sheila Ann McGing, the daughter of a couple who had emigrated from Ireland in the1920s, at a time when the political strife in that land drove many to seek a new life elsewhere. Her father remained active in Irish affairs, and she grew up with a strong awareness of her identity as an Irish-American.
She was a Chicagoan to the bone. She was fiercely proud of the city, tremendously informed about its folkways and its politics, involved in civic events and knowledgeable about the neighborhoods, restaurants and where to find bargains on every known commodity. When it happened that her husband was a Chicago policeman, it deepened her involvement with her native city.
The third element of her persona was her work with the ACR. Before joining the College staff, she worked for a typing service which the College used. In those days, Bill Stronach spent much of his personal time providing consultations to radiologists on hospital contract proposals. Each consultation involved a lengthy letter analyzing the draft and proposing amendments. After listening to Stronach's voice, she decided to ask him for a job. Her ability to produce large quantities of flawless work quickly justified her hiring. She also made clear that she would work in her own fashion, making it difficult any supervisor to hold her to regular hours and work patterns.
When she was promoted to the position of meetings manager, her talents for organizing emerged. No details were lost. After long nights, she would rise at dawn to check meeting room setups, registration arrangements and remember to send flowers to the presidential suite. As the ACR took on management of other societies, her responsibilities grew. Soon her traveling squad involved not only her own meetings people, but also other members of the staff who showed the stamina to keep up with her pace. She also took on the total association management responsibility for several affiliated societies.
She had a quick wit and a quick temper. She was lavish with her friendships and swift to express her displeasure when a co-worker or supplier failed to meet her standards.
To borrow from Frank Sinatra, she did it her way - and she got it done. She was an original and will be missed.
SS5 data shows thatshe was living at 1703 N Mango, Chicago Il when she applied for her Social Security card on June 11, 1951.
