Gerald Paul Steppke, Sr, was born on September 5, 1947 in Chester, Delaware County, PennsylvaniaG. He died on February 9, 2012, at age 64, in Trainer, Delaware, PennsylvaniaG.
Gerald P. Steppke Sr., 65, a retired Chester city police officer and Trainer Borough councilman, died February 9, 2012 at Taylor Hospice surrounded by his loving family.

Jerry was born and raised in Chester and moved to Trainer in 1994. He was the son of Gerhard P. Steppke, a former Chester Police Captain who died in 1987 and Mary McGinn Steppke who died in 2007.Jerry was a graduate of Chester High School and joined the Chester Police Dept. in 1973, where he served as a patrolman and detective. He retired from the force in 1997. Jerry was honored as Policeman of the Year in 1983 and received a Certificate of Appreciation in 1990 for honorable service in the apprehension of two armed-robbery suspects. Sgt. Richard Cominskie of the Trainer Police Dept. said Jerry will be dearly missed and was highly respected. "Jerry was not only a dear friend and superior mentor, he had more experience than I will ever see in my career, and he passed his wisdom to me without hesitation," Cominskie said. "He was a vast resource that I will not be able to replace." Following his retirement from the Chester police force, Jerry worked as a security guard for QVC in West Chester and as a driver for the Kaniefski-Kendus-D'Anjolell Memorial Home in Trainer. Jerry was known as being compassionate and kind to the families of those he encountered. Remembered as fun loving and kind, Jerry enjoyed cooking, listening to Elvis Presley music and bowling. He dearly loved his daschund, "Holly Girl," whom he spent countless hours playing with and holding on his lap. Jerry also greatly enjoyed spending time with his son, Mike, with whom he was very close, watching football at the VFW Sunday afternoons. Jerry also spent a lot of time eating and sitting on the outside deck at Barnaby's Restaurant in West Chester, where Mike is the manager. Jerry loved spending time with his son Jerry Jr. who closely resembled his dad, Jerry Jr.'s wife, Valerie, and his grandchildren. His wife, Alice, was by his side throughout his long battle with cancer. She took care of him and was with him when he died. Jerry was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Police, American Legion Post 951 in Ogden, St. Hedwig's Catholic Club, and the Delaware County Policeman's Bowling League. He was also a lifetime member of the Bowley-Fatzinick-Karpin VFW Post 5546 in Trainer, where he served in various capacities and The German American Police Association. His six years as a Trainer councilman were spent serving his community, where he represented council as public safety and code enforcement liaison. Trainer Mayor Frances Zalewski said Jerry was instrumental in planning the borough's part of the 10th anniversary 9/11 Memorial parade ceremony. He also spent every Memorial Day placing American flags on the graves of the fallen. In addition to his parents, Jerry is pre-deceased by a baby son who died at birth in 1971.

Survivors: His loving wife and best friend Alice "Babe" McClellan Steppke; sons Jerry Steppke (Valerie) of Chester Springs, PA and Michael "Mike" Steppke of West Chester, PA; grandchildren Adam Joseph and Benjamin James Steppke, who he called "Sport," and Olivia Rose and Jonathan Gerald Steppke. Jerry's grandchildren were the loves of his life. He is also survived by his brothers Gary (Kathy) Steppke of Sharon Hill, PA and Thomas (Michelle) of Aston, PA; many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: After 6 PM Thursday evening and Friday morning after 8 AM at the Kaniefski-Kendus-D'Anjolell Memorial Home, 3900 W. Ninth Street, Trainer, PA 19061.

Funeral Mass: 11 AM at Holy Saviour Catholic Church, 108 E. Ridge Road, Linwood, PA.

Interment: Lawn Croft Cemetery, 1000 Ridge Road, Linwood, PA.
