Austin King was born 1 January 1893 in Cappaghduff district, County Mayo, Ireland to James King and Catherine "Kitty" McNeely King (often transcribed as Cathering Connolly). The birth was registered 17 January 1893. Austin was baptized 8 October 1892. From that time forward, he used his baptism date as his date of birth.

He farmed with his father until emigrating to America. He left Queenstown (now known as Cobh) on 18 April 1913, exactly a year and a week after the Titanic left this final port of call on its fated voyage. Austin arrived at the Port of New York 26 April 1913 with $20 in his pockets. His final destination was Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, where his older sister, Margaret King, was living (just south of Oakland Cemetery on East Acker Street).

He began working for the Northern Pacific Railway on 10 July 1917 at the Como shops as a car repairer and builder. His career was soon interrupted by America's entry into WWI, in which he served in the U.S. Army 18 September 1917 - 2 September 1919. He returned to Northern Pacific in St. Paul until layoffs in the summer of 1940 forced him to leave his family to work in the South Tacoma shops in Washington state. He returned to St. Paul and worked the rest of his career in the Como repair shops, now known as Bandana Square. Austin King retired 1 May 1960.
