Ann Derrig, Derrycroft

The death has taken place at the MacBride Home, Westport of one of the home’ s best loved and cherished residents, Ann Derrig from Derrycroff.

Daughter of the late Bridget and Austin Derrig, Derrycroff, Ann grew up in her rural community and like many of her contemporaries emigrated to England in search of better employment opportunities. In Blackpool she worked in a hotel for a number of years, where she earned a reputation for her kindness of heart, generosity of spirit and diligence as a worker.

In her younger years she suffered the traumatic pain of losing her two only brothers, Austie and Johnnie, who died at a very tender age.

After returning to Derrycroff she took up employment in the Gaeltarra Eireann knitwear factory in Tourmakeady where her knitting skills transformed many a hank of wool into a most beautiful sweater.

After the completion of her employment with the Tourmakeady factory, she continued to hand-knit Aran knitwear for many of her customers.

Fifteen years ago she moved into MacBride Home in Westport, where she soon gained a reputation as a kind-hearted and caring person. She quickly adapted to her new home in Westport where her kindhearted deeds of collecting messages for other residents in the town was cherished with much affection.

Annie loved music, especially the music and dance at the parties for the residents at MacBride Home. She also looked forward to the regular games of bingo with the other residents in the Home.

In England and in the MacBride Home she loved to keep in touch with all the news and happenings in her native parish and she enjoyed the regular visits of her many friends.

Throughout her life in Derrycroff, England and in the MacBride Home, Westport she shared her generous talents with many people and on both days of her funeral it was fitting that the love she shared with so many was
returned as large crowds came to pay their final tributes to their wonderful neighbour and friend.

After Requiem Mass, celebrated in St. Patrick’s Church, Aughagower, by Fr John Fitzgerald, she was laid to rest in Tourmakeady Cemetery.

She was predeceased by her sisters, Bridget Lawless and Winifred McGing.

To her sisters, Kathleen Reynolds, Preston, England; Julia Ann McGurke, Tyrone and Mary Reynolds, Leitrim; nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous other relatives and friends we extend our sincerest sympathy.

May her gentle soul rest in peace.
