The 1910 census records that he is renting a house at 32 Woolman Street; his two brothers, Austin and Phil, and his brother-in-law, Patrick Hynes, are living there with him. He registers for the WWI draft (12 Sept 1918), but he has a crippled left hand, and a crippled fifth finger on the right hand, and something wrong with his heel. At this time, he is living in Rocker Montana, a small farming community on Silver Bow Creek, about five miles west of Butte. By 1930, he is widowed [her death date found in Montana death index] and confined to a TB sanitarium in Deer Lodge, Montana. Three daughters [1920 census of Silver Bow County]

Westport is listed as his place of residence. His occupation was shown as a laborer. His destination was Butte Montana, where he was to stay with his cousin Thomas Gavin, 711 Montana St., Butte Montana. When the men were at last released on 24 September 1902 they were put on a train from Dublin to Ballinrobe and they walked the final eighteen miles home to Ceapach an Creiche under the shadow of Maamtrasna, in the darkness and the rain.
