Per Aunt May, Philip had borthers in America which is why he had 100 pounds to be able to wed Penelope. But he married in 1876, so only Patrick, Austin or James clould do so. But Austin married in 1872 in Ireland, so have to consider the likelihood it was Patrick or James.

From the gravestone at Churchfield, Co Mayo, Ireland

In loving memory of Philip (Churchfield, Co Mayo, Ireland) who died Nov 5th 1923, aged 77 years and his wife Penelope, died Aug 8th 1906, aged 52 and their daughter-in-law Bridget Donohue, died April 14, 1950, aged 51 years.

From my Aunt Anne:

Most of Philip's children left the area. Liverpool and Glasgow were very Irish cities. You were either an Orangeman or a Fenian. It was dangerous - so brothers stayed together for security. The McGing men were tall and strong. I was told by a man who knew them on comparing my brothers to the McGing brothers who went before them, 'They were only a bunch of Donohoes'. Ask Sister Helen about those Westport McGings.

Dear Mr. McGing:
The following are the references for the births of the children of Philip McGing and Penolope "Nappy" Moran: All are recorded in the Cappaghduff district birt registers. You can order copies from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, Newantrim Street, Castlebar, Co. Mayo at $8 each quoting the references below. We do not hold records of death after 1901 but I would expect that the Registry will ber able to locate the deaths since the location and approximate dates are know.

Per Aunt Ann - After their mother (Penelope Morrin) died in 1906 some of the family kept in touch with Aunt Mary - the eldest sister in Ballinrobe but seems to have lost touch after they moved to Dublin. Penelope, James and Michael kept in touch with the old home in Churchfield until 1958 when the old home was sold.

Wedding witnesses were James McGing and Catherine Morrin

In a probate filing for Jane McGing dated 1968. Thomas McGing (brother) stated that her name was Anne Penelope Morrin. First time I heard the use of teh name Anne.

I have a singleton JOh\n McGing who died 11/2/1929 in Nluefield, Tazewell County, Virginia. Could this be this missing granduncle who went to Australia? I suspect Tasmania and Tazewell might sound the same to some, such as Tipperary being written down for Tourmakeady (as I've seen). Just a thought. (Research):I wrote to the ILWU, Local 23 in Tacoma to see if they had any records of my granduncle James. They did not, but they did have this:

"After looking over our records the only thing we have been able to find is that there was a John McGinn (McGaugin) in General Cargo Local #383, which was around from 1909 - 1933. He joined sometime in 1918. The name in parenthesis might be a different spelling of the name, we are not sure, it was on the card next to his name. That is all we have. Unfortunately our records do not go back that far.

The dates line up and the name is there, it is a good supposition this could be him.

Per Aunt Ann - Worked in Liverpool and then in Glasgow and must have stayed there, he did not keep in touch. He was always getting into fights.

Martin is listed with fanily in 1911 census, so he left after 1911.

There is a Martin McGing (McGinn) who went to Australia in 1941 who said he had a cousin Michael in Lewisham Hospital, London. From my Aunt Anne:

His father's favorite son. His father wanted him in Churchfield as his heir but he left too. He was in London in 1914 and joined the Irish Guards. He fought and was decorated for his bravery at the Battle of Mons early in WW1. He came home when the war was over but he could not settle on a farm and went off to the US. He went to San Francisco and like his brothers, he always signed himself McGinn. He died there a few years later from shrapnel in his body since the war. I wrote to the British Legion looking for his Army records but they said that most of WW1 records had been bombed during WW2 and could not help. Was 6'1" and had fair hair and blue eyes.

June 2009 - I found the citation for award for Philip McGinn and it fits.

Philip is NOT listed in 1911 Irish census either at home or on his own, making it likely he had gone to London.

Found his Declaration of Intehntion from 1925, says he came in 1919 on the Cedric to NY and worked as a stevedore, The document filed in Los Angeles in 1925.

Could be same guy as the two services were one after the other. (Research):I have the UK military records and those show he was a RIC Constable in Co Down, and I have the RIC records for a Philip as well.

In a probate filing for Jane McGing dated 1968. Thomas McGing (brother) stated that Philip died as noted here and had no children.

Per Aunt Ann -

Philip : Born 1890 - his father's favourite son. His father wanted him in Churchfield as his heir but he left too. He was in London in 1914 and joined the Irish Guards. He fought and was decorated for his bravery at the Battle of Mons early in WW1. He came home when the war was over but he could not settle on a farm and went off to the US. From a California Death certificate:

County of San Diego, Alpine Sanitorium, Philip McGinn, white, male, single, born June 22, 1893 age 34 years, 1 month and 16 days.. Occupation, fireman merchant marine. Place of birth, Brooklyn New York, Faher: Philip McGinn, father POB: Tipperary. Ireland Mother Maiden Name: Maron Penlop, mother POB Boston Mass. resided in Sanitorium 1 year, 3 months, 14 days. Resided in California 18 years. Died August 7, 1927 from pulmonary tuberculosis of 1 year, 6 months duration with Bronchial asthma as contributory for 8 years. Infomration provided by Records, Alpine Sanitorium, Burial: Masoric Cemetary, August 15, 1927.

Buried Mount Hope Cemetery, San Diego California. Masonic Section (Masonic Cemetery having been assumed by Mount Hope). Letter U, Lot 4, Grave 29

Obviously there are discrepancies between the family lore and this possible match; what I find striking is the name match on father and the fact that Maron Penlop looks so strikingly like a reversed Penelope Morrin. Discrepancies regarding places of birth are most likely due to the errors in the institutions records. My Aunt May has told me that often, when they said they came from Tourmakeady, that it was interpreted as Tipperary, as perhaps is done here.

The title of the book is, "ALPINE - Southern California - History of a Mountain Settlement" by Beatrice La Force. Published in 1971 by The Sunlight Press, El Cajon,
California. Page 319.

"Around World War I, Dr. Hyman Lischner of San Diego took over the Los Robles Hotel, the former Benjamin Arnold home, and made it into a sanitorium for victims of respiratory diseases. Most patients were "gassed" soldiers an others who had contracted tuberculosis in the Service.

This was a modern facility, for the time, with complete hospital care, including guided recreation for convalescents. Service men from all over the country were sent here. Dr. Barkema, a Hollander educated abroad, was brought over by Dr. Lischner as his associate. Many local people remember the hospital as a very busy place which added to the interest and commerce of the village. This is another instance where fire ended things, for the sanitorium burned down in 1923. Immediately following, Dr. Barkema built his own sanitorium on Tavern Road across from the present home of Mrs. Manila Colby.

The design was an attractive one, small cottages, planned to accommodate one or two patients only, built around the central hospital, with quarters for staff members completing the lay out. For several years, under Dr. Barkema's direction, the hospital flourished. When he left to work in a larger sanitorium near Los Angeles, Dr. Gehring took his place and stayed some years, building a substantial home for his family on Alpine Terrace. An Alpine Chamber of Commerce brochure for 1931 lists the "ALPINE SANITORIUM AND GENERAL HOSPITAL, Open to All Classes of
Cases, R.J. Sewell, M.D. Medical Director and REsident Physician and Surgeon."

Around 1942 the Sanitorium closed and sold to become the Alpine Villa apartments, as it is today."

Per Aunt May:

What this does not tell us is that Philip Jnr. served in the British Army in World War 1. He had emigrated to England and according to May Lally fell for the line put about by recruiting sergeants that they would be fighting for 'Catholic Belgium' and the rights of small nations. There was also the fact that work at the time was very slack in England. He fought in the Battle of Mons and other battles, was decorated, survived the War and came back to a cold welcome in a changed Ireland. Their father Philp Snr. was ashamed of him and Peadar Cavanagh, their brother-in-law, who was in the Gaelic League and an avid admirer of all things Irish, despised him. Philip came out of the War with shrapnel wounds, other ailments and shell shock. He emigrated to California for the climate and died unmarried in 1927. May recalls that Miss Gillen a teacher in Trianlaur told her that before he left, he visited her mother, Mrs. Gillen, who had taught him in Treen school and that this unique gesture was much appreciated and that Philip was 'a real gentleman'.

He was in London in 1911. He is recorded on England's 1911 census as a signaller in the British army at Chelsea Barracks, aged 21 with his birthplace named as Mountporty, Galway.

There is no Mountporty on record. It looks like Mountparty, which could be Mount Partry or the Partry Mountains overlooking Lough Mask. It could be that his declaration was transcribed wrongly by whomever was filling out the barracks form or that he himself had been trying to cover his own tracks.

Biography

Jane McGing was born on December 1, 1887 in Churchfield, Mayo, IrelandG. She and Stephen Arthur Connor were married about 1914 in California, United StatesG, 1930 US Federal Census says was 15 years married

I regret to tell you that we found no entries in marriage or baptism registers for either the Connor name nor the McGinn/McGing names. The Parish from which St Helen's was formed is that of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and the cathedral would have been the parish for the family address. I will return your check and include the contact information for the Cathedral and the other parishes of possible interest. My record search included appropriate registers for St. Helen, St John the Baptist and the nearby parishes of Mt Carmel, St. Alphonsus and St Therese. If we knew where the Connors met, then we might be able to narrow the search for the wedding? I am going to make some suggestions as to your search with the full understanding that you may have already carried out every one:

1. There is a California Birth Index available. It was once online through the CA Government site. and may still be? If not, Ancestry.com has it. The son should be in this listing.

2. There is also a CA Death Index available. You should expect to find the Sr Connors here. If the son died in CA, then you should find him in this index.

3. There is a CA Marriage Index, too. If the Connors married in CA they should appear.

The three indices cover the years of your interest and will include dates and locations. Ancestry.com has all three.

The Church of the Latter Day Saints has extraordinary resources when it comes to genealogy. Most of their churches also have a genealogy library open to the public where they will advise and assist people researching their families. I suggest you contact the nearest LDS church and inquire as to the location of their nearest to you library.

We wish you every success in your quest,

Scott Alston, Archivist. She died on January 20, 1964, at age 76, in Fresno, Fresno, CaliforniaG. She was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Fresno County, California, United StatesG.
Jane McGing was also known as Jame M. McGinn. She was also known as Jane McGinn. She was also known as Mary Jane McGinn. Https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1888/02523/1934743.pdf

Based on the 1901 census, she was born about 1888. Based on 1911 census, born 1881.

On US 1930 Federal Census that she shaved 10 years off her age and according to her, was married in 1921 and son Thomas born in 1923. But yet her husband said he was married at age 30 and was currently 45, meaning married in 1914 - 1915. She says married in 1921 but she also says she's a LOT younger.

Note that a John and a Michael McGing were also on this ship.

I find it interesting that she is 19 and listed as spinster. There was a Julia Conoboy on this ship as well. But the John McGing listed is age 20, so unless they both took 10 years off their ages, the dates don't match. Yet I can find no other Jane McGings or McGinns.

July 25, 1913 Jane McGing, age 19 and listed as single, arrived in New York City on the ship Cedric, having sailed from Queenstown. Tourmakeady is listed as her place of birth. Occupation: Servant. Closest relative in Ireland is father James, Churchfield, Tourmakeady Co Mayo. Destination was Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Would stay with Cousin, John Conoboy, 2123 Justin St, Pittsburgh. 5 foot, 7 inches, fair complexion, auburn hair, blue eyes. Note that a Julia Conboy and Kate Coyne both from Tourmakeady were also travelling with Jane.

MARY JANE CONNOR
Died: 01/20/1964
Fresno Catholic Cemeteries-HC HOLY CROSS SECTION E
Location 22 - 12

A requiem mass will be celebrated Mondat at 9 AM in St. Helens Church for Mary Connor, 72, owner of Connors Grocery at 500 South Backer Ave.

She died Monday in a local hospital after a short illness.

A natice of Ireland, Mrs. Connor came to Fresno 40 years ago. Besides operating the grocery, she owned several rental properties. She was formally employed as a waitress.

She has no known survivors

The rosary will be celebrated tomorrow at 7:30 PM in the Harry Palm Chapel. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Per the 1930 Census they were married in 1914, really soon after coming to teh US and her husband listed his occupation as a farmer in 1918 when he registered for teh draft. He also didn't list her as a spouse, instead listed his father. (Research):First mention of her being spouse to Arthur is in 1926 in the city directory. Prior editions do not show her. Calling when married into question.

Per her February 1935 will, she stated 1) that she was 39 years old (making DOB 1896?) and 2) that she had a son named Patrick Thomas Connor, who was living in San Francisco in 1935.

The wil had the town of Tourmakeady listed as Tipperary

Aunt Ann says -Jane : Born 1888. Went to the US about 1910 and settled in Fresno, California. She did not keep in touch with the family. In 1966 Patrick Cavanagh Jnr. lived in England and saw an ad in an English paper looking for the heirs of Jane McGinn from Tipperary. It mentioned all the brothers' names and that they were in Liverpool and Glasgow in 1910. It wasn't the first time Tourmakeady was mistaken for Tipperary. Eventually, he proved that they were the right family. She was his mother's sister who had not been in touch since 1910. The lawyers in Fresno, Calif. got in touch with me in Chicago looking for my father's address at that time. They asked for Thomas McGing or McGinn.

Wanted the home place. She had a boyfriend and wanted to marry but her father refused so that could have been the reason for leaving, and never getting in touch. She did not marry. She spent some years in Texas before going to California. Thomas inherited a dry oilwell (just our luck) in 1970 from her.

However, given family history that says she was born in 1884, there is a 10 year discrepancy in date of birth. I believe this ellis island record does belong to this Jane because Tourmakeady is just too odd to be a different person despite the date discrepancy..

From my Aunt Anne:

Went to the US about 1910 and settled in Fresno, California. She did not keep in touch with the family. In 1966 Patrick Cavanagh Jnr. lived in England and saw an ad in an English paper looking for the heirs of Jane McGinn from Tipperary. 5/16/01 Fresno County California County Recorder states that they have no probate records under either McGing or McGinn that match Jane from period 1956 - 1976. (Turns out that was because her last name was Connor.)

Wondering if she was making herself younger?

From Christine Powers:

We can't find an initial immigration record for Penelope; however, we understand that she was not in NY too terribly long before she married Patrick Joseph Mulroy (26 Jan 1897 - 09 Mar 1951).

No long after, her father died in Ireland and she returned home to visit from Aug to Nov 1922.

I believe it was your aunt (May Lally) that told me that Penelope emigrated with a friend named Julia Madden. Patrick's mother was Mary McEvaddy and many of the McEvaddys changed the surname to Madden, so that's a possibility.

Penelope and Patrick lived in the Bronx at 2433 Valentine Avenue. "They" were the building superintendents (mostly Penelope from what my mother says). Patrick worked for the NY Transit system on the trains in some capacity. Together they raised 5 children, all born in NYC:. (Research):Per Aunt Ann - Went to the US in 1919 and settled in New York. She married a man from Bohola, Co. Mayo by the name of Mulroy. They had five children - three boys and two girls. She died about 1944 and their eldest son was killed crossing the Rhine just as the War ended. The others are still there. She always kept in touch.

Changed surname to McGinn

Biography

Patrick McGing was born in 1808 in Arderry, Mayo, IrelandG. He and Jane Scahill were married in February 1835 Sister Helen thinks there were at least 4 more children: Penelope [Nuala], Francis, Margaret born in 1862, and Thomas born on 19 Nov 1865. There is a Margaret McGing married to a McGreevy in the Aughagower baptismal lists. Mrs. John Sheridan is the sponsor for two of her children. This does not necessarily mean that she is Mary McGing Sheridan's sister, since there were two Sheridan families in Aughagower and both had boys, approximately the same age, named John. He died on December 20, 1884, at age ~76, in Arderry, Mayo, IrelandG.
Lived in the village of Ardara, (Arderry) parish of Aughagower.

Died Arderry 20 December,1884 aged 76 in the presence of his son James McGing, of Bronchitis after 6 days. (death cert.)

Found in the 1818 Rent Rolls of Lord Sligo in Arderry.

August 11, 1870 via Lord Browne. Complaintant (??) Malley, laborer, Arderry Parish, Aghagower Defendent Patt McGing, laborer, Arderry Parish Aghagower - Trespass of 17 head of cattle on meadow at Arderry Co Mayo on August 1, 1870. Resolution - no appearance.

New case, same date, same complaintant and defendent - Tresspass of 5 ducks twice in oats at Arderry County Mayo on August 5, 1870 Resolution - no appearance.

New Case - Margaret Malley, matron, Arderry, Parish Aghagower, Complaintant
Pat McGing, Austin McGing, Jane McGing, Honor McGing, Philip McGing, laborors, all of Arderry, Parish of Aghagower Defendents. Defendents, did on August 5 1870 at Arderry Coounty of Mayo, unlawfully assault complaintant. Resolution - no appearance.

Bessborough Commission - Patrick M'Ginn, a tenant of Lord Sligo in teh townland of Arderry, told teh commission that between 1853 and 1869 his rent had been raised 3 times from 28 pounds to 98 pounds. Rather than accept Lord Sligo's argument that the rent raises were justified by teh low rates following teh Famine, M'Ginn claimed that "according as we improved the land he raised the rent". The fact that there is 25 years between the eldest and the youngest child has always made me wonder about the validity of these facts.

Cannot find any birth or baptismal records in Mayo, but outside there are some interesting possibilities... We know there were McGings in Dublin in late 1790- early 1800s, so perhaps? Lines up wit hthe James working theory.

Biography

Myles McGing was born about 1750 in Arderry, Mayo, IrelandG. He and Catherine Guess were married.
The first McGing that came to Westport was from Ardara or Bohaun. He started a business buying cow hides and bringing them by the cartload to Athlone and often walked most of the way because he had the cart loaded and heaped. He changed the horse halfway between Westport and Athlone. He put the load on the train there and came back to Westport with a load of shoes and leather and sold them in his shop on High Street.

This is a speculative person. I have no proof and will not find any, but I am testing positive with dna for a person who does indeed link to me via this potential connection. So need more dna but for now this is a working connection.

There are issues with it - there are McGings in Dublin and some in Mayo but the records are so very very slim. So this is NOT proven. But it does serve as a working hypothesis.

His children are also real people but whether they were his children, siblings etc is also just speculation. DNA says that people of these lines are related, but exactly how remains a mystery. But this family construct does match the Y DNA and the autosomal DNA and to the degree possible, actual records.

Reminder, just a theory, not proven.

If birth was 1828, then unlikely she was married before 1845, making thise first 3 children likely belonging to the other family.
